The conventional ‘manual gearbox’ is combined with a 3-pedal control of Accelerator, Brake and Clutch. Learning to drive with this configuration entitles you to a Class ‘B’ driving licence.
After passing your practical test, you can drive any car whether manual or automatic gears. Manual gear selectors usually have 1,2,3 & 4 arranged in an ‘H’ pattern with Reverse and 5th gear both offset and protected from accidental engagement with a button, collar or lever.
Automatic gears use a 2-pedal arrangement usually with a double width footbrake and standard accelerator. Learning to drive an automatic is less stressful both physically and mentally. Simply select Drive and you are away.
After passing your practical test you will hold a Class ‘A’ driving licence for automatic vehicles only.
Automatic gear selectors have typical P,R,N,D positions for Park, Reverse, Neutral and Drive. Either option will give you a new found sense of freedom and mobility, the choice of makes/models on both new and used cars is very wide in all price ranges. Reliability and economy in today’s cars is extremely good for both types.
